I truly couldn't stand this movie but I'm glad you got something out of it, and something beautiful and important at that. All I got was a self-serious 2.5 hour piece of community theater with a highly overrated lead performance.
i think that's part of why i loved it? its so cringey, with some almost just awful vocal performances. but its about cringey people. community in general is cringey. maybe community theater will save the world
Ah, the coward's defense. I was fine with the sub-par vocalists, if anything I wanted everyone to be worse at singing. What I mean by "community theater" is the choreography feels extemely sophomoric and "first draft" (not to mention eye-gougingly repetitive), the songs may as well be second-rate Disney, and everyone is distractingly clean. I don't think any of this was intentional.
well the songs are pretty much all classic shaker hymns and the choreography is based on traditional dance, so if you want to disregard the rich american tradition that produced the 2008 classic "the greatest man that ever lived" then fight the fight. but i did find amanda seyfried's accent work musical and otherwise to be not the best part of her performance
I loved this. To see one's life's work reflected in the musings of the next generation is a remarkable and incredibly hopeful experience. I won't quote you correctly here, but your ending assertion about the many voices in the street with no one able (or should we say willing?) to hear their harmony reflects, at least in my heart, the importance of each individual life offering itself to the great jigsaw puzzle we are all trying to solve - the amazing chorus we are all trying to sing - the human connectedness underlying the individual expressions that we all are.
